Rewind to 1970

A tight finish in the Sportsmans Club Handicap at Sandown...  Close Combat (Lester Piggott) wins by a short head from Bradfield (Pat Eddery claiming 5lbs allowance) with the blinkered Carrymore (Des Cullen ) in third place.

Ridden here by Jimmy Lindley winning the Vernons Sprint at Haydock by four lengths from Royal Captive (Ron Hutchinson) with Balidar (Lester Piggott) a further one and a half lengths back in third.
